Each year we are with others at Christmas. Many households welcome guests. We visit in each other’s homes. Visiting is a part of the celebration of Christmas. That is fitting, for one of the uniquenesses of the very unique story of God becoming man (Christmas) is that visitors add even more brilliance to the meaning of Christmas. Oh sure, we’ll meet with each other and visit at Christmas. We are family and friends, and we love each other. But our visits also mean we eat too much, spend too much, and have far too little margin in December. The visits at that first Christmas are more substantial in meaning. They come together to form a rich cluster of purpose and significance. As we pass through the celebration of Advent in 2025, we are going to ponder the study of who came to visit at that first Christmas. We’ll treasure what it meant for each of them to show up. Let’s re-visit the Christmas story with new eyes and ears, and with hearts pitched toward a responsiveness to Jesus Christ.
